Great ride down at the Glen last night! AmyBrown, Trailbait, Intyme, and I met up with Dave Perry, Dan, Jack, Louie, and Steve, representing the Waverly mtbers. I've ridden with all those guys at the Glen before at one time or another. IMO, the trails at the Glen are the most technical trails I've ridden in Central NY. It's like they pour special Miracle Grow for Tree Roots in the soil down there. Not to mention the creek crossings, which are numerous and rocky. However, when you misjudge the depth and run out of velocity in the middle of them, they make for a really awesome bike washing mechanism, especially at the end of the ride.
The plan was originally for Dave to take us on a preview of the Expert course. However, he ended up taking us on the Beginner/Sport trail instead due to the number of riders who showed up. He correctly predicted that the number of people would make it impossible to ride the Expert course before dark, and as it was, we had to take a shortcut back to the parking lot because we couldn't even finish the Sport course in the 1hr45m we had to ride. It's not that the course takes an insane amount of time to ride; just that there is a lot of stopping and going. The trail conditions were not too bad considering the recent deluge of rain. There were a few muddy stretches, especially on the newly constructed trails, but after the trails are worn in and we have a few days of sunshine, that should dry right up. We had a really great time. The Waverly folks are really friendly and fun to ride with. Dave is always willing to lead a tour of the Glen, so you can get in touch with him if you want your own preview of the course. I believe he has gps data for the trails if you want to go down and explore on your own, though, if you can find a time to ride it with Dave, it's worthwhile.
